China's government controlled media has used the 40th founding anniversary of the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China, held this year on Sept. 1, to highlight great social and developmental progress made in the region and denounce the activities of exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. However, many Tibetans-in-exile claim that Communist China is spreading propaganda, that harsh religious repression prevails, the freedom of speech is quashed and conditions in the country have not improved in the past 40 years.
